Marketing Case Study, Alfred Camera - Tyler Currey

Alfred Camera
The Alfred security camera app is an app that allows you to use old smartphones as security camera to avoid costly technology. You can use phone cameras that are already in your home and tether them to your main cellphone using the app and monitor any room in your house. The app is free to use and requires just a gmail account to link the viewing phone to the camera phones.

Alfred has multiple promotional videos on YouTube to demonstrate their app. There most popular video having 377 thousand views. Another video I found which did fairly well was on the TechCrunch channel which has 354 thousand subscribers and 163 thousand views.

As far as marketing goes I didn't find a whole lot except for their YouTube videos, which are doing pretty good. The only social media account I could find was on Facebook and they have around 4,000 "followers", no Instagram or Twitter account.
  • Made top 5 best home security apps on Android Authority, placed #2
  • Has a fairly nice website to navigate with useful Q&A regarding security
How they make money: While the app is free to use, it does include advertisements and in order to remove ads a monthly charge of $3.99 is needed which includes I believe a one week storage of video. For $29.99, ads are gone for a year as well as a video storage for up to one month. These options are not necessary to use the app.

The app also has great reviews (4.5 average), 5 million downloads, and is #1 grossing in House and Home, these stats are from the Android Play Store. As far as the Apple App Store is concerned, Alfred has a 4.7 overall rating.

The only direct competitor I have found is SeeCiTV. It is direct copy of the Alfred app, achieves the same purpose, i'm assuming its free, and it seems they stole the idea because they are way less popular. The only promotional video I found on YouTube has 23 thousand views, a fraction on Alfred's videos. They also have only 100 thousand downloads and are #7 on the same top grossing list. (According the Play Store couldn't find the app on Apple)

I believe Alfred's value proposition is as follows; Alfred gives the average homeowner the ability to setup their own security system and easily monitor their cameras. All the while being free to use and utilizing old camera phones that are not being used, instead of costly security cameras.

Questions for the Audience:
  • Would you rely on this method of security for more important tasks such as a baby monitor or other such situations?
  • If you read the 5,798 one star comments on Alfred, would that turn you away from the app even though it averages 4.5 stars?
  • Any problems you could see to Alfred?
